Ivan Sutherland




Birth: May 16, 1938

Professional Life: He earned his bacholars degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon, his masters degree from the California Institute of Technology, and his PhD from MIT. He has held numerous positions in his career at Darpa and RAND Corporation, and was an associate professor at Harvard, as well as the Vice President at Sutherland, Sproull and Associates.

Computer Science Contributions: He invented the first system to support graphical interaction with computers, and also developed the first virtual reality headset.

Katherine Johnson




Birth: August 26, 1918 Death: February 24, 2020

Professional Life: She earned her bachelors degree in Mathematics and French from West Virginia State College in 1937. She was hired by NACA in in the June of 1953. Katherine Johnson was originally trained by NASA to analyze plane crashes, and collect data on them. She retired from Nasa in 1986.

Computer Science Contributions: She was an American mathematician who pioneered computers making America’s first human spaceflight possible. She helped calculate the landings of Apollo 11 and Apollo 13, and recieved three Nasa Special Achievement Awards.

Ada Lovelace




Birth: December 10, 1815 Death: November 27, 1852

Professional Life: Lovelace was educated privately by tutors and then self-educated, but helped by Augustus De Morgan, the first mathematics professor at the University of London.

Computer Science Contributions: Lovelace was an associate of Charles Babbage, whose prototype Analytical Engine she wrote a program for. She has been called the first computer programmer. She also wrote detailed annotations including insight on how the Analytical Engine could further be used.
